U.S. Underwater Space Program Focus Of UNC Wilmington Planet Ocean Seminar Series

WILMINGTON, NC – Dr. Steven Miller, director of the National Undersea Research Center at UNC Wilmington, will present “SeaLab, Tektite, Hydrolab and UNCW’s Aquarius: The Story of the U.S. Underwater Space Program” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, in the university’s Center for Marine Science (CMS) Auditorium. This free lecture is part of the CMS Planet Ocean Seminar Series.

Miller, who joined UNCW in 1991, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. As NURC director, Miller oversees one of six regional centers funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that conducts research throughout the United States. He helped develop UNCW’s underwater lab Aquarius and the Coral Reef Science Program. Referred to as America’s “inner space station,” Aquarius is located off the Florida coast near Key Largo.
