Brubeck Brothers to Perform for UNCW’s Annual Guest Artist Jazz Festival

WILMINGTON, NC - Chris and Dan Brubeck, sons of renowned jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, will perform during the annual UNCW Guest Artist Jazz Festival scheduled for Friday, March 22, and Saturday, March 23, in the university’s Warwick Center Ballroom. The brothers will be featured soloists in a concert with the UNCW Big Band at 8 p.m. Friday and will perform with their Brubeck Brothers Quartet at 8 p.m. Saturday.Chris, the third son in the musical Brubeck family, is a composer, lyricist, orchestral arranger, music educator and performer who plays bass, bass trombone, guitar and piano. He enjoys an active and diverse career and is at home playing jazz, rock, folk, funk and classical music. In addition to composing and arranging for the London Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Aspen Wind Quintette and the Manhattan Choral Festival, Chris Brubeck has written three musicals and hundreds of songs. The Boston Pops commissioned him to compose a concerto to open their 2001 season.
Drummer and percussionist Dan Brubeck has toured internationally for more than two decades as the leader of his own group, The Dolphins, as well as a featured soloist with some of the world’s top jazz artists. His drumming style, distinctive solos and use of odd time signatures have earned him the respect of critics worldwide. Dan released three CDs with The Dolphins, and was featured on 10 Dave Brubeck albums. He also recorded with Larry Coryell, Livingston Taylor, Michael Franks and Roy Buchanan and toured with The Band, Gerry Mulligan, Jon Hendricks, Paul Butterfield and Warren Bernhardt.
Chris and Dan Brubeck co-lead the Brubeck Brothers Quartet that features Pete Levin on keyboard and Mike DeMicco on guitar.
The annual UNCW Guest Artist Jazz Festival includes high school and college jazz bands from across the state performing in clinics, which will be conducted by the Brubecks. These clinics are scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Warwick Center Ballroom and are free and open to the public.
General admission for each evening concert is $10, $5 for UNCW faculty and staff. UNCW students with a valid I.D. are admitted free to both concerts. Tickets will be sold at the door starting one hour before show time.
