CORE ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM TRES VIDAS AT UNCW
Friday, March 15, 2002
WILMINGTON, NC – A chamber music theater piece called Tres Vidas will be performed by the Core Ensemble at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Kenan Auditorium at the University of North Carolina at WilmingtonTres Vidas, written by Chilean author and scholar, Marjorie Agosin, deals with the lives of three Spanish American women: Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni, and Salvadoran peasant-activist Rufina Amaya. With this provocative choice of protagonists Agosin centers on the three women’s contributions in the diverse fields of art, literature, and politics. One actor, Georgina Corbo, will portray the three protagonists and three musicians will play a musical score that includes arrangements of traditional Latin American folksongs and tangos as well as new compositions. The text of the play is in English but the songs are in Spanish.
The Core Ensemble, which was established in 1993, has gained international recognition and bringing them to Wilmington was a collaborative effort made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council and contributions from: College of Arts & Sciences, the Office of Campus Diversity, departments of Art & Theatre, Creative Writing, English, Foreign Languages & Literatures, History, Music, and Philosophy & Religion.
Following the performance, there will be an audience discussion lead by Latin American literature and culture specialists. Admission to the performance is free.
