UNCW English Department Presenting “From Stage To Screen” Film Series

Thursday, March 14, 2002

WILMINGTON, NC – The UNCW English Department will present “From Stage to Screen,” a series of films based upon stage plays, on three consecutive Thursdays in April. Each screening, which will include commentaries by UNCW faculty, will begin at 7 p.m. in Morton Hall’s Bryan Auditorium, followed by a reception. The series schedule is listed below.

April 11 – His Girl Friday

This 1940 screwball comedy directed by Howard Hawks stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Based on the 1928 play The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, it is considered to have some of the snappiest dialogue in cinema. Professor Todd Berliner will present.

April 18 – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, this 1966 film was based on Edward Albee’s 1962 play. The film, directed by Mike Nichols, was nominated for 13 Oscars, winning five. Professor Paula Kamenish will present.

April 25 – Henry V

Kenneth Branaugh’s 1989 film was based on William Shakespeare’s play about the English king’s bloody conquest of France. The film is Branaugh’s first and, many believe, best Shakespeare adaptation. Professor Lee Schweninger will present.

Funding for this film series, which is free and open to the public, was provided by Charles Green III. For more information, call the UNCW English Department at 910/962-3320.
