UNCW English Department To Present Reading

Wilmington- Dr. James Nagel, a professor at the University of Georgia, will present “Hemingway: The True Story Behind A Farewell to Arms” at 3:30 p.m., Monday, March 25, in King Hall Auditorium.

Nagel will discuss how Hemingway’s family influenced his involvement in World War I, where he served as an ambulance driver and in the canteen corps, as well as his romance with a hospital nurse and how these events were used in A Farewell to Arms. Film clips will also be shown.

Nagel is the author of many books including The Contemporary Short-Story Cycle: The Ethnic Resonance Genre, Stephen Crane and Literary Impressionism, Ernest Hemingway: The Oak Park Legacy, Ernest Hemingway: The Writer in Context, and Hemingway in Love and War.

Hemingway in Love and War was selected by The New York Times as one of the outstanding books of 1989. It was the basis for a movie starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O’Donnell. He has also published more than 80 journal articles and has lectured on Hemingway in 17 different countries.
