UNCW to Host Two-day AIDS/HIV Seminar

WILMINGTON, NC – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington will host a two-day seminar about AIDS/HIV in Asia and Africa on Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16.Co-hosted by the South Atlantic Association for Asian and African Studies (SASASAAS), the seminar opens at 4 p.m. Friday with the lecture “Cognitive Dissonance and New Struggles: AIDS Policy, Human Rights and Transformation in South Africa” by Dr. Leslie London from the University of Cape Town. This talk is scheduled for the UNCW University Union, Room 100.
The film Askakara, an African dark comedy about the pharmaceutical politics of AIDS, will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday in the university’s Warwick Center, Center Stage Café.
Dr. April Gordon from Winthrop University will discuss “Social Factors in the Spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa” at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Warwick Center Café. A roundtable discussion will follow at 10 a.m.
UNCW is a member of SASASAAS, which is a 27-member consortium of institutions in the Southeastern United States that was established in 1971 to enhance the study of Asia and Africa. The UNCW Departments of English and History and the Office of International Programs sponsor these free, public events.
