Broder to Speak at the Institute of Political Leadership 30th Reunion

Wilmington, N.C. - Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist and reporter David S. Broder of The Washington Post is the headline speaker for the 30th anniversary celebration of the fellows of the Institute of Political Leadership at UNCW.

The celebration, which includes a reunion of the institute fellows and UNCW Political Science alumni, will be April 19 and 20. Seminars will be held in Morton Hall Auditorium at UNCW and are open to the public.

IOPL is a leadership program whose mission is to improve the practice of democracy through knowledgeable, ethical leadership by preparing candidates for public office. Many of the 624 graduates hold state and local elected offices.

Washington magazine rated Broder as “Washington’s most highly regarded columnist,” by both editorial-page editors and members of Congress. He is author or co-author of seven books, including his new book Democracy Derailed. He will lecture on “American Politics: Perspective and Trends,” at 7 p.m. April 19.

Phil Noble founder and CEO of PoliticsOnline, the first international firm for fundraising and Internet tools for politics, will speak on “Politics on the Internet: Campaigns and Government,” at 8:30 a.m. April 20.

“Campaigning and Governing: Some Perceptions and Advice,” moderated by IOPL Fellow Gene Arnold, NC House (R-Rocky Mount) and a panel made up of Fellows: Linda Coleman chairman of Wake County Commission (D-Raleigh); Fred D. McClure, Davidson County Commission (R-Lexington); Mia Harris, NC House (R-Fayetteville); and John H. Tabor, Charlotte City Council (R-Charlotte), will begin at 10 a.m. April 20.

Ralph Mitchell, president of the Mitchell Group and former program associate and trainer at the Center for Creative Leadership will discuss, “Political Leadership: Vision and Goals,” at 1:15 p.m. April 20.

Milan Dluhy, chairman of the UNCW Political Science Department, will discuss, “Training Activities and Seminars for the Fellows of the Institute,” at 3:15 p.m. April 20.
