Senior Class Works to Raise Money for Sept. 11 Memorial
Monday, April 15, 2002
By Kristin Summerford, PR InternWilmington, N.C.-The 2002 UNCW senior class is trying to raise money to continue the tradition of presenting the university with a gift. This year, it will be a monument in memory of the tragedy of Sept. 11.
“The gift of a memorial flagpole and plaque will symbolize UNCW’s pride in the United States and its ongoing commitment to peace through education and the world community. These symbols will stand as a reminder to future classes of the sacrifices that are made to protect freedom,” said Mark Kelly, a member on the senior gift planning committee.
In addition to the memorial, the senior class plans to generate enough money to fund three scholarships that will be offered to individuals from each of the remaining junior, sophomore, and freshmen classes, who can best express how September 11 and terrorism changed their lives while at UNCW
.
While a majority of the funds needed have been donated from the senior class, donations are still being accepted and will be recognized in the registry associated with the memorial. The cost of the memorial and scholarship is estimated at $10,000.
