UNCW Announces First Endowed Lecture Series

Wilmington, N.C.- UNC Wilmington is pleased to announce the creation of an endowed annual lecture series entitled “The Virginia and Derrick Sherman Emerging Scholars Lecture Series.”The lecture series will provide an institutionally sponsored platform for emerging scholars to present perspectives, research, concepts, and approaches to modern issues and theories in history, politics, and international affairs. It will include public lectures, faculty seminars, and classroom presentations that will feature an annual Sherman Scholar.
The endowed lecture series, in honor of Virginia and Derrick Sherman, is possible through their son, Phillip D. Sherman and his wife, Birgitta L. Sherman, and their daughter, Ann Sherman-Skiba and husband Dr. Gunther Skiba.
A selection committee comprised of three UNCW faculty members will choose each year’s Sherman Scholar. The chair of the history department will head the committee and will select two additional faculty members with approval of the provost. The two additional faculty members should have research interests in history, politics, and international relations.
