UNCW Moviemaker Lecture to Feature Stanley Colbert and Screening of Landmark Independent Film Private Property

Monday, April 22, 2002

WILMINGTON, NC – Emmy Award-winning producer/director/writer Stanley Colbert will screen and discuss the landmark film Private Property at 2 p.m., Friday, April 26, in UNCW’s Morton Hall, Bryan Auditorium. This free, public program is part of the Moviemakers Lecture Series sponsored by the university’s Film Studies Program.

A distinguished visiting professor of creative writing at UNCW, Colbert produced the low-budget movie Private Property in the 1950s. The film was hailed by Time magazine as the start of the American New Wave, and The New York Times credited it with opening the door to independent filmmaking in an industry long-dominated by Hollywood studios. The British Film Institute is providing a copy of the film for this special screening.

During his long career in film and television, Colbert wrote and produced for United Artists, 20th Century-Fox and Columbia Pictures; and as executive in charge of production or Ivan Tors Studios in Miami, he produced the series Flipper and Gentle Ben. Colbert also worked as a literary agent representing clients such as Jack Kerouac and Margaret Atwood. He later served as president and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers in Canada.
