WILMINGTON, N.C. – To recognize faculty who have made a difference in the lives of their students, the UNCW Alumni Association Past Chairs’ Council has established the Distinguished Faculty Award.

“We all have had professors along the way who had a positive influence in our lives,” said Judge Becky Blackmore, who heads up the council. “They are not being recognized anywhere else, and this is a way we could honor them that would be unique to our group.”

The council is seeking nominations for the award that will be presented at convocation in August. The deadline for nominations, which may be submitted by UNCW faculty or staff, alumni, students or community members, is July 15.

Nominees must be/or have been a full-time faculty member with a minimum of seven years of service to Wilmington College and/or UNCW. The award may be given posthumously. The recipient will receive a $500 cash award and a medallion.

Nominators must describe ways the faculty member supported students beyond the walls of the classroom such as advisor, reference, mentor, or coach in regard to scholarship, leadership or other significant ways. They must describe examples of the individual’s research and creativity, contributions to the field of study/academia, committee service, Faculty Senate or other leadership roles.

Nominators must give examples of the faculty member’s time, talent and resources given back to the region and beyond. Initiatives that were created or expanded should be listed and described. Other relevant supporting documentation to accurately depict the significance of the nominee for this award can be included with the nomination.

Nomination forms can be downloaded in pdf format from the alumni association Web site, www.uncwil.edu/alumni. Letters, limited to two pages in length, must indicate how the nominee meets the criteria set forth. Nominations can be sent to Patricia C. Smith, Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, Wilmington, NC, 28403, by fax at 910.962.2685 or e-mail to smithpc@uncw.edu.
