WILMINGTON, NC – Dr. Paul Hosier, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, was named interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, effective June 28. He will succeed Dr. John C. Cavanaugh who assumes the presidency of the University of West Florida July 1.

UNCW Chancellor James R. Leutze, in announcing the appointment, expressed his confidence in Hosier’s abilities.

“Dr. Hosier’s knowledge and experience in budgetary matters will prove valuable to the university during the state’s current financial crisis,” said Leutze. “As public funding for education continues to decrease, Dr. Hosier’s charge is to sustain UNCW’s quality academic offerings that our students and their parents have come to expect from the South’s leading public comprehensive university.”

In addition to his administrative positions, Dr. Hosier is a professor of biology. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. from Duke University. He joined UNCW in 1972.

Hosier said he looks forward to taking on the added responsibility of his appointment.

“This will be a challenging year for UNCW in light of the state’s financial situation,” Hosier said. “I am fortunate to have a strong administrative team in place in the division, and I will be working with the deans of UNCW’s colleges and schools and directors of the academic support areas to insure that they receive the resources necessary to deliver exceptional academic programs to our students.”

Hosier will serve as interim provost as UNCW conducts a nationwide search to hire a permanent replacement. The provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs reports directly to the chancellor and oversees the academic units of the university. A national search can take up to a year to complete.
