Harris Wins UNCW Staff Award of Excellence at 27th Annual Service Luncheon

WILMINGTON, NC -- Accounting technician Sandra Harris received the 2002 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence presented today at the university’s 27th annual Service Awards Program in Wagoner Hall.Harris, who works in the university’s Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies, was honored for her public service efforts in the greater Wilmington community. She is a member of the board of directors of New Hanover County Community Action and active in the Community United Effort (CUE). A non-profit organization, CUE promotes awareness of and aids the families of missing persons. For the last two years, Harris has been a member of the Harbor Foundation which seeks housing for those in need in the local community.
The Staff Award of Excellence, presented annually, recognizes an employee whose service to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism. This year’s other nominees were Marybeth Bianchi, alumni publications coordinator in the Office of University Relations; Phillip Brown, media specialist and editor of the Campus Communique in the Office of University Relations; Lenwood “Bo” Dean, office assistant for the Honors Scholars Program; Andrea Dorow, assistant dean of students in the Division of Student Affairs; D. Mark Gay, research technician in the Department of Biological Sciences; Tommy Guinn, electrician with the Physical Plant; Nancy Hill, computer production specialist in the Office of Institutional Research; Marvin Jones, computing consultant in the Division of Student Affairs; Kathy McDaniel, director of community development in the Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies; and Sandy Rogers, office assistant in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.
As this year’s recipient, Harris received a $1,500 award presented on behalf of the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a presentation clock and a framed certificate. In addition, her name will be engraved on a plaque which is on display in the university’s administrative building, Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is nominated for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.
Mary Gornto, vice chancellor for advancement, was mistress of ceremonies. In addition to the Staff Award of Excellence, the university recognized employees who achieved five-year anniversary levels of state service and retiring employees. These honorees were:
