Visiting Creative Writing Professor to Hold Reading Sept. 19

WILMINGTON, NC – Visiting professor and author David Wright will read from his works at 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, in Morton Hall, Bryan Auditorium, at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. A book signing will follow this free, public event that is sponsored by the university’s Creative Writing Department.

Wright, who is serving as a visiting faculty member in UNCW’s Creative Writing Department, is the author of Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of the Pea Island Lifesavers. This work depicts the lives of the all-black lifesavers who rescued the crew of the E. S. Newman in 1896.

An assistant professor in English and Afro-American Studies at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Wright has received numerous awards and fellowships from the National Endowment of the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education. His television credits include The Pea Island Story, which received the 2000 Salute to Excellence Award for television feature/news story presented by the National Association of Black Journalists.
