Thursday, October 31, 2002
Wilmington, NC – The UNC Wilmington Native American Student Organization (NASO) will host its second annual Fall Powwow from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, on the University Commons. The purpose of the event is to promote, demonstrate, and educate about the Native American culture on UNCW’s campus and in the community at large. The day will be filled with dancing, drumming, a history of why Native Americans have powwows, Native American arts and crafts, jewelry, and demonstrations of various craft making. Although storytelling will take place throughout the afternoon, at 2 p.m. there will be storytelling inside a teepee.
A powwow is a way to keep Native American traditions alive in the modern world and offers a time for all people to come out to experience and enjoy Native American history and culture, said Billie Fleming, president of NASO. The UNCW powwow will have several different tribes represented to share the experience. Confirmed to attend are representatives of the Lumbee, Waccamaw Siouan, Coharie, and Cherokee tribes.
The event is being co-sponsored by UNCW Student Government Association, UNCW Office of Student Affairs, UNCW Campus Activities and Involvement, UNCW Office of Campus Diversity, UNCW Chancellor's Office, # 1 Stunna Racing Co., United Christian Campus Ministry, El Vaquero, UNCW Office of Academic Affairs Planning and Outreach, Tropical Tans Tanning Center, Accent Photography, Reindance Productions, LLC, TJ and Co and the African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American Social Work Student Organization at UNCW (A.H.A.N.A.).
