WILMINGTON – The Foundation of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington has named five new members to serve a three-year term ending June 30, 2005. They are as follows:
Dr. Ron Copley, Wilmington, NC, president of Copley Investment Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina with emphasis in finance and real estate, and a B.A. and M.B.A. from Old Dominion University.
Mickey Corcoran, New Bern, NC, former member and chair of the UNCW Board of Trustees and president of Woodruff Distributing Company. He is a graduate of UNCW with a B.A. in math and was the 1999 Alumnus of the Year.
James R. Pierce, Wilmington, NC, president of Pierce Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is a graduate of UNC-CH with a B.S. in pharmacy.
Jim Stasios, Wilmington, NC, registered representative with Jefferson Pilot Securities Corporation. He is a graduate of UNCW with a B.A. in business administration and is the 2002 Alumnus of the Year.
Margaret Weller-Stargell, Wilmington, NC, president and CEO of Coastal Horizons Center. She is a graduate of NC State University with a B.A. in sociology.
The Foundation of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Inc. is a legally incorporated, separate nonprofit 501(c)-(3) organization incorporated on Aug. 14, 1970. The purpose of the foundation is to promote the educational purposes of UNCW, which is its sole beneficiary.
The board of directors of the foundation consists of 27 members who serve three-year terms and convene quarterly. The terms of office holders and foundation business follow the UNCW fiscal period beginning each July 1. The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement serves ex-officio as the executive director of the foundation.
The foundation is the designated vehicle for gifts of stocks, non-cash property (both real and personal). It manages certain trusts where the university is the beneficiary. The foundation can also receive gifts of cash. The foundation’s operating budget, developed by the university, typically funds scholarships, professorships, development operating funds, moving expenses for senior officials and chancellor-approved expenses. The foundation is authorized to borrow money to assist the university purchase and hold property until the state appropriates funds to pay the foundation loan expenses.
