Wilmington, NC – UNC Wilmington graduate Adrien Lopez was awarded

a 2003-04 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship from Rotary District 7730

which covers Southeastern North Carolina. She will attend graduate

school at Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso in Valparaiso, Chile.

Miss Lopez graduated from UNCW in May 2002 with a

B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in Spanish. At

UNCW, Lopez served as Student Body President, helped

start the activist organization People Educating with an

Active Commitment to Equality (P.E.A.C.E.), and was

involved with Global Serve. Global Serve volunteers

participate in service projects and trips abroad.

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship will enable Miss Lopez to study

abroad for one year and provide funding for transportation, tuition and

fees, room, board, some educational supplies, and language training, and

is valued at US$25,000.

“I believe that my life experiences up to this point have been for a reason

and have provided the foundation needed to take my life to the next

level,” wrote Miss Lopez in her application essay. “I hope that through

this Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship I can contribute in my own

sphere of influence by representing not only my district, state and

country.

“I approach this experience as an ambassador of goodwill and a world

citizen who will carry forward a message of peace and social change that

crosses cultural boundaries to not only enrich my life, but someday I

hope that through these diverse experiences, I will be able to uplift

humanity in some small way,” she said.

She was sponsored by the Wilmington Rotary Club. At present, Miss

Lopez is teaching 30 4th graders in English at Day Star School in

Juticalpa, Honduras. Her work and study in South America will help

further her career goals of someday working in an international

organization committed to social change, especially in the human rights

and environmental realm of developing nations.
