Thursday, January 09, 2003
Wilmington -- Effective Jan. 1, 2003, David M. Donaldson was promoted
from community operations commander to chief of University Police at
the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
“David’s philosophy of policing is based on community involvement,
crime prevention and student development with a strong emphasis on
proactive problem solving,” said Sharon Boyd, vice chancellor business
and support services. “We know his leadership will continue to make our
campus a safe place to work and study,” she said.
Donaldson will head a team of more than 30 uniformed
officers, detectives, telecommunicators and other
support staff. “This team has been and will continue to
be the most important resource the department has,” said
Donaldson. “They have been doing a fine job, and I plan
to give them the tools and support they need to continue
that outstanding work.”
Donaldson joined the University Police Department in
1992. During the 10 years he has served at UNCW, his strong work ethic,
commitment to improving the university community, and on-going
training have resulted in promotions from officer to captain.
A native of Bladen County and a graduate of Clarkton High School,
Donaldson earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Mount Olive
College. He also holds certifications in basic law enforcement training
and criminal justice technology from Bladen Community College and the
Law Enforcement Executive Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Donaldson was named Outstanding Officer of 2000 and earned the 1994
Housing and Residence Life Cornerstone Award. This award is given to
one individual each year who has contributed outstanding time and
effort on behalf of student housing and residence life concerns. In
addition, Donaldson has served on numerous university and
community-wide committees including the New Hanover County Bicycle
Advisory Committee, Chancellor’s Advisory Board for Alcohol, Tobacco
and Other Drug Use, Greek Advisory Board, and Sexual Assault
Response Team.
“It is an enormous honor to serve the UNCW community in this
capacity,” said Donaldson. “While we will refine some areas and expand
others, the university community can continue to expect a well trained
and equipped police department that values people as individuals, is
committed to providing impartial service, and is dedicated to continuing
partnerships that prevent crime and educate the community.”
Donaldson is married to the former Leigh Lanier of Charlotte, and they
