RE: Demonstration of patient simulator

1 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7, Hoggard Hall, Room 103

The UNC Wilmington School of Nursing has acquired a new high-tech

tool to prepare future health care practitioners – the Laerdal SimMan

Patient Simulator. Members of the media are invited to attend a

demonstration of the simulator scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7,

in UNCW’s Hoggard Hall, Room 103.

According to Dr. Virginia W. Adams, dean of the School of Nursing, the

simulator will benefit students by allowing them to practice patient

assessment and medication administration prior to entering a clinical

rotation.

“The simulator will provide instant feedback to students regarding their

decision-making skills,” said Adams. “We will be able to provide

students with various medical scenarios. Students will then be able to

plan and carry through their own course of treatment regardless of the

outcome.”

Partial funding for of the simulator was provided by a donation of $24,260

from New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Information about the

simulator is available on the Web at www.laerdal.com. (Select training

products. Once there, you will see a link for simulators; select SimMan.)
