WILMINGTON, NC -- The UNCW Big Band, under the direction of Frank Bongiorno, and the Jazz Combos, directed by Jerald Shynett, will perform at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, in Kenan Auditorium. Admission is $5; $2.50 for UNCW faculty, staff, senior citizens, and children under 12; and free to UNCW students with valid ID. Tickets will be on sale at the auditorium box office the night of the concert.

The UNCW Big Band will perform a variety of music made famous by the big bands of Thad Jones, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton and others. The UNCW Jazz Combos will open the concert with jazz standards as well as original compositions. One of the UNCW Jazz Combos was featured in the second annual Student’s Edition of JAZZIZ On Disc, The College Years II. This CD comprised 15 students and/or groups from colleges and universities around the country who have excelled at their respective schools.

In addition to their concert schedule, UNCW Big Bands have produced four recordings including On the Edge. This latest CD features the band as well as solo performances by the following UNCW jazz faculty: Jerald Shynett, trombone; Frank Bongiorno, alto saxophone; Bob Russell, guitar; Andy Whittington, piano; and Steve Morgan, trumpet. Copies of the CD will be on sale at the concert.
