UNCW Presents Artist Recital Series Faculty Chamber Concert

WILMINGTON, NC -- The UNCW Department of Music will present the third of eight concerts in its 2003 Artist Recital Series at 8 p.m., Thursday, March 6, in Kenan Auditorium.

UNCW faculty artists Richard Thomas (cello), Barry Salwen (piano), Ellen Robison (piano), Philip Singleton (violin), along with guest artist Peter Neubert (viola) are the featured performers. The program will include selections from the following composers: Manuel de Falla, Gabriel Fauré, Salvatore Sciarrino, Paul Hindemith, Johann Strauss Jr. (arranged by Maximilian Kreuz) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Admission is $5; $2.50 for UNCW faculty, staff, senior citizens, and children under 12; and free to UNCW students with valid ID. Tickets will be on sale at the auditorium box office the night of the concert.

RICHARD THOMAS studied cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music, De Pauw University, and University of North Texas. He recently earned the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina. A former member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de la Rupublica Dominicana, Thomas is on the faculty of UNCW. He is principal cello of the Wilmington Symphony and during the summers is head of the String Department at Camp Encore/Coda in Sweden, Maine.

PETER NEUBERT studied viola at Lawrence University and the Manhattan School of Music. He is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Kentucky. As a member of the Heidenheim, Ad Hoc and Niles String Quartets, Neubert has performed in countless chamber music recitals across the United States. He was a semifinalist at the 1998 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Neubert’s recent performances in Italy as a member of the Yamaguchi-Neubert Duo were hailed as “vibrant, precise, passionate and determined” by the Corriere della Sera. He has performed as a member of the Des Moines and Grand Rapids Symphonies, the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, and the Chicago String Ensemble, with which he made recordings of contemporary string orchestra music for Centaur and Albany Records.

BARRY DAVID SALWEN is an international concert pianist who has won numerous prizes in competitions, including second prize in the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition. He has given master classes throughout the world including at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China. Since 1992, he has served as associate professor of music at UNCW. Along with performing the great works of the standard repertory, Salwen has given lecture-recitals on the American composer Roger Sessions on three continents and was the first artist to record this master’s complete piano music. Opus One, Centaur and Koch International have released Salwen’s CDs which feature works by a variety of composers.

ELLEN ROBISON joined the UNCW Music Department faculty in 1990. She has served as music director for Opera House Theatre Company, accompanist for the Wilmington Choral Society, music director at Winter Park Presbyterian Church and music consultant on several films and television shows. She has performed in numerous recitals as pianist, organist and cellist.

PHILLIP SINGLETON was appointed the violin/viola instructor at UNCW. He is also orchestra director at Hoggard High School and Myrtle Grove Middle School and a member of the Wilmington Symphony, the Cape Fear Chamber Players, and the Cape Fear Chorale. Singleton earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Georgia.
