UNCW to Host the NC Regional Competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl

Friday, February 21, 2003

Wilmington – UNCW will host the North Carolina regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 1, in Dobo Hall.

Seventeen teams from high schools across the state will be tested on their knowledge of ocean sciences through a variety of quiz-bowl format questions. The competition will take place in various classrooms of Dobo Hall. Ashley High School, Cape Fear Academy, and Hoggard High School will represent New Hanover County. Each member of the winning team will receive a laptop computer and an all-expense-paid trip to the national competition to be held in April in La Jolla, CA.

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl gives students a chance to examine marine science, both as an in-depth area of study and as a possible career. According to Dan Baden, director of the UNCW Center for Marine Science, the competition is an excellent demonstration of high school students’ interest in ocean sciences. Inaugurated in 1998, this annual event is managed by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research (CORE).
