Talk Explores Role of Science in Shaping Coastal Policy

WILMINGTON, NC – Douglas N. Rader, senior scientist and manager with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Southeast/Caribbean Oceans Program, will discuss “The Role of Science in Shaping Coastal Policy in the 21st Century” as part of the 100th meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science, hosted by UNCW March 21-23.

Rader’s talk, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, in Dobo Hall, Room 103, is open to the public. The recipient of the 2003 Governor’s Water Conservationist Award, Rader is especially interested in blending natural and cultural heritage into an integrated sense of place for all. With the Environmental Defense Fund, he manages ecosystem-based restoration planning from Long Island to and across the northern Caribbean (including statewide ecosystem restoration planning in North Carolina).

The three-day meeting of the N.C. Academy of Science is sponsored by the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences, Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Earth Sciences and Honors Scholars Program; the Sigma Xi Chapters of East Carolina, UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University; the N.C. Biotechnology Center and GlaxoSmithKline. It was organized by David Webster, Larry Cahoon, Kate Bruce and Bo Dean.
