UNCW English Department Presents “Movies That Matter”

Monday, March 10, 2003

WILMINGTON, NC – The UNCW English Department is hosting “Movies That Matter,” a series comprised of three films based on plays or works of fiction that deal with ethical ideas. Screenings, which are free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. March 26 and April 2 and 7. The film schedule is listed below.

March 26 - A Doll’s House

In this film version of Henrik Ibsen’s play, Claire Bloom stars as Nora, a sweet, lively and seemingly frivolous woman with a destructive secret. Anthony Hopkins stars as Torvald, her puritanical husband who loves her but does not take her seriously. A Doll’s House, first presented in 1879, is one of Ibsen’s best-known and most controversial works. It has become a classic expression of women’s rights. The play’s central character, Nora Helmer, realizes that after eight years of marriage, her husband has never viewed her as anything more than a sheltered, petted doll.

Dr. Janet Ellerby will introduce this film, which will be shown in the Warwick Center, Center Stage Café.

April 2 - In the Bedroom

Based on the short story Killings by André Dubus, In the Bedroom is a film of love and revenge. Starring Marisa Tomei, Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, this suspenseful and disturbing movie should spark a debate about the morality of “a just revenge.”

Dr. John Clifford will introduce the film, which will be shown in the Warwick Center, Ballroom 1.

April 7 - M. Butterfly

Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang adapted his Tony Award- winning play for this film. The movie challenges assumptions about gender and culture as it deals with how perceptions in relationships, both personal and political, may be colored by preconceived notions and hidden agendas.
