UNCW Hosting Panel Discussion, “Women in Activism” as Part of Women’s History Month Celebration
Monday, March 24, 2003
By: Stephanie L. Kirby, PR InternWilmington - Women in Leadership, a student organization at UNCW, will host the panel discussion “Women in Activism” at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 31, in the Warwick Center, Center Stage Café. The featured panelist will be Dawn Peebles, cofounder of Objective: Collective, a nonprofit group based in Chapel Hill that promotes collective living. The university’s English Department is sponsoring Peebles’ visit.
While attending UNC-Chapel Hill, Peebles became involved in social justice issues. After graduating in 1999, she worked as coordinator of Internationalist Books and Community Center, a nonprofit, collectively run media center and bookstore
“I was living with an amazing group of like-minded friends, but our home was a health and safety hazard and our landlord constantly threatened eviction rather than make the necessary repairs,” said Peebles. “After realizing we’d paid over $40,000 in rent we began to investigate other options of ownership.” They formed Objective: Collective and traveled throughout the United States researching dweller-controlled, collectively organized living situations.
