UNCW Professor Lands a Prestigious NSF Assignment

Wilmington, NC- UNCW biology professor Dr. Joseph Pawlik has been awarded a two-year appointment with the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.Pawlik, professor of biological sciences and specialist in marine chemical ecology, is serving as the foundation’s associate program director for the Biological Oceanography Program, Division of Ocean Sciences, and Directorate of Geosciences. He began the assignment June 5.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the NSF. I bring my research and teaching background to help with the evaluation of programs within the division. In turn the university will benefit from the knowledge and experience I will gain in the program and policy-level matters and issues at the federal level,” Pawlik said.
As part of his responsibilities Pawlik will oversee the panel that meets twice a year to grant research funding. He said this review process is very competitive with only 20 percent of proposals receiving funding.
While on assignment with the National Science Foundation, Pawlik will continue to devote time to his research at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science.
