UNCW Appoints new Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Wilmington, N.C. - Effective July 1, Dr. Raymond Burt, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington assumed the position of assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs in the office of the Provost.Burt replaces Dr. Melton McLaurin, who retired June 30. Burt is responsible for academic policies and faculty development, as well as overseeing the Honors Scholars Program and addressing student issues for academic affairs.
Burt has devoted 12 years to academic administration. Prior to joining UNCW he was an associate dean at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif., where he served as chair of the Modern Languages Department for two terms. Burt was twice a recipient of a Fulbright Grant to Austria and served three years on the National Screening Committee for the Fulbright Grant. Since joining the faculty of UNCW he has mentored seven students to successful Fulbright applications.
Burt came to UNCW as an associate professor of German in 1996 and was promoted to full professor in 1999. At that time he was appointed associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Some of his accomplishments at UNCW include: the creation and organization of College Day, a university/community event, and the development and organization of the UNC German Studies Consortium, which coordinates the efforts of German faculty at seven of the University of North Carolina campuses. In 2002 he participated in the Institute of Management & Leadership in Higher Education at Harvard, which focused on organizational change in the face of the current challenges facing higher education.
Burt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from NCSU in economics, a Master of Arts degree from Middleburry College in German, and a Ph.D. from UCLA in German languages. He has published two books about Friedrich S. Krauss, the Slavic folklorist. Other areas of research include Austrian literature and 18th century German literature.
