Wilmington, N.C. – University of North Carolina at Wilmington employee Barbara Woodbury, a development researcher in the UNCW Division for University Advancement, will compete in the Ms. North Carolina Senior America Pageant.

“This pageant is a way to honor senior citizens who are at least 60 years old. Since I qualify, I thought why not compete,” said Woodbury. “For my grandchildren in Abilene, Texas, I want them to say ‘look at what my granny did.’” A mother of two, the Winston-Salem native has called the New Hanover/Pender County area her home for over three decades. She is a member of the Carolinas' Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (CAPRA), the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) and has also been a notary for over 35 years. Her volunteer work for Topsail Baptist Church in Hampstead includes finance committee work, an assistant with the children’s ministry program and a Sunday school substitute teacher.

The Ms. Senior America competition will consist of an evening gown competition, a talent competition and a philosophy of life question. Nine contestants will compete in this year’s pageant that will be held 6 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Roland-Grise School in Wilmington. Admission price is $8 per person and can be paid at the door.
