UNCW: A Deck School with a Deck Book

Monday, August 11, 2003

Wilmington, N.C. — The William Randall Library on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will host its annual Thirsty Tome 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27. in the first floor administrative lobby. UNCW creative writing Master of Fine Arts students will read their works from the book, Deck.

Deck is an anthology comprised of 26 works by current and former creative writing MFA students. The book includes fiction, poetry and non-fiction writing. The title comes from the book The Hipster Handbook by Robert Lanham, which lists UNCW as a deck (the Hipster term for cool) school.

As written in the introduction by the editors of the book the word deck takes on a different meaning. “Deck is a celebration of everything that literature can be – freeing, inspiring, haunting and cathartic. It is the embodiment of what our program stands for: careful, rigorous study of the craft of writing and the kind of community that encourages writers to be their best.”
