Wilmington, N.C. – Hundreds of staff and faculty lunched while supporting their colleagues at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s 28th Annual Service Awards Program Aug. 5. In his introduction, Sam Connally, assistant to the chancellor for EPA and director of human resources, noted that 498 seats had been put into Warwick Center with an overflow crowd in the Center Stage space. He mentioned that years ago awards programs had been held in the University Union Living Room with punch and cookies served.

Master of Ceremonies Michael Capaccio announced the individuals recognized for their length of employment at the university from five to 35 years, along with recent retirees.

Connally returned to the podium to announce the 13 nominees for the UNCW Board of Trustees Staff Award for Excellence. Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo presented each nominee with a certificate. Lenwood “Bo” Dean was then announced as the winner of the award. According to the nominating information, Dean “is a strong advocate” and “gives selflessly to the students.” He works with honors students, as well as members of the Young Democrats, PRIDE and the Episcopal youth group.

In an e-mail Dean wrote, “I am one of those blessed people that get up every morning happy and grateful to go to work! From the students who inspire me to do more and better every day to the director and associate director who allow me a chance to work and perform my tasks with a sense of integrity and a feeling that I am so appreciated, my days are good ones at UNCW!”
