UNCW University Union Presents “Abstract Journey”- an Exhibit by Gail H. Henderson
Wilmington, N.C. – The University Union Exhibit Series, sponsored by Campus Activities and Involvement Center, will present “Abstract Journey,” an art exhibit showcasing paintings of rich color, shape and design by local artist, Gail H. Henderson. The exhibit will run from Sept. 8 through Nov. 3 in the Warwick Center. A “Meet the Artist Reception” is scheduled 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.
“Abstract Journey” focuses on earth colors and natural shapes, taking inspiration from the American Southwest and the rural high plains of Spain. In these abstract works, Henderson uses layers of transparent color juxtaposed with opaque passages of acrylic paint to imply the light freshness and heavy strength of the mountains, desert plains and the early peoples living there.
Gail H. Henderson began her hands-on art activity in 1999, after a career in teaching, education policy-making and school administration. She notes that her previous career as an educator allowed her to gain insight into her own learning process with art. Since entering the world of art, Henderson has taken advantage of many resources to develop her painting. Her work has been in numerous juried exhibitions with the Wilmington Art Association, Watercolor Society of N.C., the Women’s Center in Chapel Hill, Coastal Plains Exhibit and the Office of Cultural Affairs at the Northwest New Mexico Arts Council.
The Warwick Center is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays. For more information, please contact the Campus Activities and Involvement Center at 910/962-3827 or visit www.uncw.edu/stuaff/arts.
