African-American Cultural Continuing Education Courses Offered at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC- The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies is offering two classes focusing on African-American culture. Each course will be held at the Eden Institute African Diaspora Concourse located in downtown Wilmington.
UNCW’s Glen Harris, an assistant history professor, will teach “Appreciating 20th Century African-American Literature” 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, October 14 through November 4. The course, which deals with a sampling of the political, social and intellectual arguments of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright and James Baldwin, is designed to give participants a better understanding of the past as it affects the present and to enhance their capability to argue and write analytically and critically on historical interpretations. The cost for this course is $49 per person.
Cynthia Hill Noll, an expressive arts facilitator, teacher, and counselor, will teach “Fun with Drums: the African Way.” The course will run 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, October 20 through November 3. Participants will learn the four basics of African drumming rhythms and the instructor will share her stories and pictures of her journey to Guinea, West Africa to study the internationally famous Les Ballets Africaines. The cost for the course is $39 per person and the registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 9.
