Let's Read!UNCW and You Features UNCW Professor Clyde Edgerton; Mark Cox Discusses Creative Writing
Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Wilmington, NC – Programming for the week of September 8, Let’s Read! UNCW and You, will feature Clyde Edgerton with his eighth book, Lunch at the Piccadilly. Host Betty Ann Sanders says Edgerton’s new book is filled with the “spirit and spunk of everyday life.” Lunch at the Piccadilly deals with the aging population and shows compassion for people dealing with elderly issues.“It’s risky writing about any particular group of people. Some of these elderly people suffer from dementia and other things and I was afraid people would think I was making fun of them,” Edgerton said. Many adults want to stay home and be able to care for themselves. “I was fortunate to have two aunts who were without children and they took care of me growing up, and in old age I was able to care of them. I learned so much from them. Lunch at the Piccadilly makes old age seem more fun,” Edgerton says.
He will also play some of his original songs that are found in the back of the book. He will perform“Bologna, Bacon and Beer,” and “Ain’t Got No Problems. His CD will be available for purchase during the book signing at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Bristol Books.
Mark Cox, chair of UNCW’s Creative Writing Department joined the show to discuss some of the new ideas and developing works from the department. “Many works are coming out of the department’s faculty and what I love about them is they are committed to teaching. That’s what attracts and keeps students,” Cox said.
The Master of Fine Arts applications have sky rocketed over the last several years as UNCW receives increasing coverage. “No other young program has achieved the same exposure; we (UNCW) have really put ourselves on the creative writing map. It takes an entire faculty and students to make something like this work.”
Let’s Read!
