Memo to Media: Cornerstone Hall Ribbon Cutting Ceremony 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10
Monday, September 08, 2003
MemorandumUniversity of North Carolina at Wilmington Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo cordially invites you to join her at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10 in front of Cornerstone Hall for a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new three-story residence hall. The 62,000-square-foot, $11.6 million facility houses 264 students.
Cornerstone completes the planned quadrangle as it is positioned between the Honors and International residence halls. It has five single resident assistant rooms, 106 double occupancy rooms and 14 triple occupancy rooms. Cornerstone is equipped with several TV/living rooms, computer labs and kitchens. It will also include four “smart” classrooms and additional study areas.
Cornerstone houses the new learning initiative program at UNCW, which was designed exclusively for first-year students. Nine groups of 20 to 25 students who live in the hall participate in learning communities with a humanities focus. Students involved in learning communities are able to live and take most of their classes with the same small group of students.
Learning communities are made up of three courses: two UNCW basic studies liberal arts courses and an integrative seminar. Student benefits include small classes, social events and introduction to college-level study skills. Some examples of learning communities include: behavior, bodies and crime, the lure of the sea and age of cultural revolutions.
Student residents of Cornerstone Hall will be available to give guided tours and comment on the new building at the ribbon cutting.
Please enter the campus on Randall Drive, follow Randall past the water tower, follow the road as it takes a hard right, then take the first left onto Cahill Drive, take the first left behind International House and you will come to the parking near Cornerstone Hall.
Hope to see you there.
