UNCW Music Department Announces Fall Performance Schedule

WILMINGTON, NC— The following list includes all performances sponsored this fall by the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.This varied series features guest artist performers such as the Paul Halley Consort and guest artists Joe Murphy and Matthew Slotkin, UNCW music faculty, Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, student ensembles and student recitals. Most events are in Kenan Auditorium.
Tickets are available at the Kenan Auditorium box office at 910-962-3500 one hour prior to the concert. Advance tickets are available only for Wilmington Symphony Concerts and Arts in Action Series Performances. Please call the Music Department office for additional information at 910-962-3390.
Saturday, Sept. 27 – Wilmington Symphony Orchestra **
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Steven Errante, conductor
A showcase for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, with J. S. Bach’s Suite No. 3 (including the celebrated “Air on the G-string”) and Symphony No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov.
Friday, October 3 – UNCW Big Band and Combo*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Frank Bongiorno and Jerald Shynett, directors
The UNCW Big Band and Combos have garnered numerous awards over the years at various jazz festivals and have been delighting audiences with performances by their young and up and coming new talents, as well as their varied repertoire of jazz styles.
Monday, Oct. – Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Christofer Ackerman, director and conductor
The Wind Symphony and the Chamber Winds are the premiere wind ensembles of the UNCW Music Department. The concert will include pieces by Rimsky-Korsokov finishing with Dello Joio’s scenes from The Louvre.
Sunday, Oct. – UNCW Faculty Concert*
4 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Mary Jo White, flute; Richard Thomas, cello; Philip Singleton, violin; and Bernard McWilliams, guest artist violist
This chamber concert features ensemble works by such composers as Mozart, Villa-Lobos and Roussel.
Sunday, Oct. 19 – UNCW Chamber Singers and Orchestra
8 p.m. Church of the Servant, Joe Hickman, conductor, Nancy King soprano
The concert will include selections from Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate, Haydn’s Missa brevis in F, Telemann’s Laudate Jehovam omnes gentes and Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder.
Thursday, Oct. 23 – Evening of Brass Concert*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Christofer Ackerman, director, Jerald Shynett, director, Dan Johnson, director
Members of the UNCW brass studios will be performing chamber works and solo pieces. This concert will also feature the newly formed UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet.
Saturday, Nov. 1 – Wilmington Symphony Orchestra**
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Barry David Salwen, piano; Christofer Ackerman, trumpet; Frank Bongiorno, saxophone; and Robert Nathanson, guitar
UNCW musicians share the stage with the WSO, including performances of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and the area premiere of a new work by former faculty member David Kechley. Brahms’ Third Symphony concludes the concert.
Wednesday, Nov. 5 – Junior Recital
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium
John Fulkerson, a UNCW music student, will present a recital featuring jazz arrangements by Coltrane, Kern and Fulkerson. Jerald Shynett, Doug Irving and Michael Ounallah will assist him.
Friday, Nov. 7 – Paul Winter Consort Performance
Marva Robinson, guest vocalist, 8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium
in conjunction with Arts in Action Series
Formed in 1967, the Paul Winter Consort was one of the earliest exponents of world music, combining elements from various African, Asian and South American cultures with jazz. This performance of the Earth Mass features the UNCW Concert Choir directed by Joe Hickman.
Saturday, Nov. 8 – Paul Winter Consort and UNCW Concert Choir
2 p.m. Warwick Center Ballroom
UNCW Music Department and the Church of the Servant host a liturgical performance of Earth Mass featuring the Paul Winter Consort with the UNCW Concert Choir directed by Joe Hickman. Dorothy Papadokos is the guest organist. The Reverend Joe Cooper will officiate the Eucharist and the Blessing of the Animals with a service open to all.
Sunday, Nov. 9 – Student Voice Recital
4 p.m. Kenan Auditorium
Voice students Melina Gammans and Caroline Camper share a recital featuring art song by Schubert, Granados, Grieg and Hahn with pianist Patricia Ainspac.
Thursday, Nov. 13 – Guitar and Lab Band*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Bob Russell and Christofer Ackerman, directors
The UNCW Jazz Guitar Ensemble or “Wire Choir” is a group performing multiple guitar arrangements drawn from a wide variety of jazz styles from swing to bop to contemporary original compositions.
Tuesday, Nov. 18 – Saxophone and Guitar Duo Recital*
2 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, guest artists Joe Murphy and Matthew Slotkin
Guest Artists Joe Murphy and Matthew Slotkin will present a saxophone/guitar duo recital performing music by Towner, Beaser, Piazzolla, Corea and Kechley. Both teach music at Mansfield University and are frequently invited to perform at international music festivals.
Monday, Nov. 24 – Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Christofer Ackerman, director and conductor, and Steven Errante, composer and conductor
This concert will premiere the newly formed Faculty Brass Quintet with a piece composed and conducted by UNCW Professor Steven Errante.
Friday, Dec. 5 – UNCW Big Band and Combo*
8 p.m. Kenan Auditorium, Frank Bongiorno and Jerald Shynett, directors
This end-of-the-semester concert features these top UNCW jazz groups at the peak of their performance abilities.
Wednesday, Dec. 3 – Honors Recital

UNCW music students are featured in this audition-only concert.

*$5 General admission, $2.50 UNCW faculty and staff, senior citizens and children under 12, free for UNCW students with valid ID.
