WILMINGTON, NC – The Communication Studies Society student organization of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington hosted its 2nd Annual Project Protégé Kickoff Luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 26 at Sticky Fingers restaurant.

Project Protégé, a mentoring program that pairs UNCW students with local professionals, is designed to give students an opportunity to learn about careers in communication-related fields. This year’s program includes over 50 participants, representing a variety of fields, ranging from public relations to broadcast journalism.

The year-long program allows mentors and students to foster a relationship at their own pace and schedule. Project Protégé’s flexibility is one of its most attractive features, as it permits each pair to decide when and how often to meet. Mentoring activities include job shadowing, resume critiques, career advice, and meeting for lunch.

“Project Protégé gives students a chance to learn firsthand what working in the real world is like,” according to Angela Sherrill, Project Protégé student coordinator. “Students can then decide whether they want to pursue that career.”

The luncheon gives professionals and protégés an opportunity to meet for the first time. The luncheon is co-sponsored by the UNCW Department of Communication Studies.
