WILMINGTON, NC- The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s English and psychology departments and the Buckner Lecture Series will host a discussion by memoirist Virginia Holman entitled “When a Family Member is Psychotic: The Need for Early Intervention and Consistent Treatment,” 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 in Bryan Auditorium, Morton Hall, Room 100. A reception and book signing will follow in the lobby. This event is free and open to the public.

Virginia Holman, author of Rescuing Patty Hearst: Memories from a Decade Gone Mad, has written a memoir of her mother’s slow descent into schizophrenia. In 1975, Holman’s mother abducted her children, ages eight and one, and brought them to live in the family’s cottage in Virginia convinced the voices in her head were directing her to establish a field hospital in preparation for a cataclysmic war that never came. Clyde Edgerton, a professor with the UNCW creative writing department says of Holman’s memoir, “[It] will suck you up and spit you out, whisk you away and bring you back, take your breath and then some.”

Holman will read from her memoir and discuss the progress of her mother’s illness, the impact of mental instability upon family members, their struggle to acknowledge the illness in order to get help and the need for early intervention and treatment.

Holman’s discussion is part of the Buckner Lecture Series established by Charles F. Green III in honor of his friend Katherine K. Buckner to provide funding to bring guest presenters to UNCW.
