Community Link Features Local Filmmaker; Alzheimer's Memory Walk
Monday, October 27, 2003
Wilmington, NC – Programming for the week of November 3, UNCW Community Link, an interactive, public affairs television show chats with Dr. Renee Vincent about the making of her film Conversation with Kafka and also with Dr. Mary Rudyk and Jeanne Martin concerning information for alzheimer care-givers and the Alzheimer Memory Walk.Dr. Renee Vincent, UNCW professor in the art & theatre department, speaks with H.E. “Hunter” Thompson, Jr. regarding her independent film. Conversation with Kafka was filmed in Prague and is based on one of the author’s short stories. Although Kafka lived a tragic life, this story remains hopeful. Themes in the film include religion and family relationships. Twenty-two UNCW honor students traveled to Prague with Vincent to help complete the project. Taking over three years to complete, Conversation with Kafka is unique due to the use of widescreen anamorphic format. Because Prague plays a major role in the film, this lens was used in order to portray as much of the city as possible.
Dr. Vincent explains, “Prague is Kafka’s mistress, she’s like an old crone with claws – it’s hard to let her go.”
Conversation with Kafka premiered at the Cucalorus Film Festival. Kodak currently features information about the shooting of the film on their website.
A walk to benefit alzheimer’s disease will be held November 8, 2003 at the loop in Wrightsville Beach. Betty Ann Sanders speaks with gerontologist Dr. Mary Rudyk and Jeanne Martin, whose husband David is afflicted with alzheimer’s. Only 20 days ago Martin made the decision to place her husband in a continuing care facility. Having cared for him by herself since the onset of alzheimer’s in 1998, Jeanne needed help but wanted to keep David in a safe, nurtured environment.
“I took care of him for over five years. It was hard to see his memory go down but I tried to keep him in the mainstream as much as possible,” Martin said.
Alzheimer research points to an inflammation of protein particles in the brain as a potential cause. Dr. Rudyk gives details on a new drug to treat alzheimer’s. Twenty of her patients are using the drug with only some seeing results.
“Everything is a step closer. Knowing what you’re dealing with is the first step,” Rudyk explained.
Pat Lowe, editor and publisher of Wrightsville Beach Magazine and Lumina News, provides this week’s Editorially Yours segment.
