Tuesday, October 28, 2003
By: Kenneth Luck, PR InternWILMINGTON, NC – Paul Winter Consort will perform in the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Kenan Auditorium at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. This reflects a new location from previous announcements. The performance is co-presented by Arts in Action Performance Series, the UNCW Department of Music and Church of the Servant. It is free and open to the public.
Integrating world music with songs from the wild to celebrate the whole earth as a sacred space, the Mass for the Earth was commissioned by the dean of the cathedral as a contemporary ecumenical Mass and is performed annually on the first Sunday in October in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York as part of the cathedral’s celebration of the Feast of St. Francis.
In 1967 Paul Winter created an ensemble for which he used the name, “Consort,” borrowing the name from the theater bands of Shakespeare’s time. The Paul Winter Consort has since traveled the world, performing some 2,000 concerts in 37 countries. Since 1980, they have been artists-in-residence at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where they have presented close to 100 different musical events.
The Mass for the Earth features the Paul Winter Consort, gospel soloist Marva Robinson, the sounds of wolf, whale, eagle, harp seal, Amazonian musical wren, Russian loon and the choruses of UNCW and Church of the Servant. The performance will also include live animals.
Admission passes will be given to those standing in line prior to the performance. For reserved seating, please contact Church of the Servant at 910/395-0616. There is a suggested donation of $25 for reserved seating. There will be an environmental fair on the Kenan Auditorium lawn before the service.
