UNCW’s Second Annual College Day

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington invites the public to become college students for a day through its second annual College Day program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. in Kenan Auditorium with orientation to follow at 9:15 a.m.

The UNCW College of Arts and Sciences and the Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies, together with the professional schools of business, education and nursing, are offering 45 one-hour, non-credit ‘classes’ for the lifelong learner. Participants may attend four classes, taught by award-winning teachers in the natural sciences, fine arts, history, literature, film, creative writing, philosophy, religion, Spanish, criminal justice, business and many other exciting academic disciplines.

The cost is $20 per person, which includes lunch at Wagoner Hall student dining facility. An optional cultural event will be offered that evening for a reduced rate of $5 per person. Roger Shew, earth sciences, will speak on "Natural History and Hazards of North Carolina Coastal Plain."

Dr. Frank Bongiorno, music, will discuss “Jazz in the 20th Century.”

Dr. Robert Toplin, history, will present “Who Killed JFK?: The Assassination in Fact and Controversy.”

Philip Gerard, creative writing, will discuss, “Writing Your First Book.”

Carol Pendergrast, art and theatre, will speak on “Finding Your Voice, Mending Your Speech.”

Dr. Lou Buttino, film studies, will discuss “Doing Film Documentary Work.”

Dr. Katherine Montwieler, English, will present “The Other Victorians: Three Women Look at Love.”

College Day participants may attend a UNCW University Theatre special presentation of Alfred Uhrey’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, in Kenan Auditorium. A special admission price of $5 for College Day participants will be available on the day.
