UNCW Creative Writing Professor and Seahawk Author David Gessner to Read

Wednesday, October 01, 2003

WILMINGTON, NC – The University of North Carolina Creative Writing Department presents a reading by essayist David Gessner at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13 in Cameron Hall Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow in the lobby. This event is free and open to the public.

Gessner’s most recent book, Return of the Osprey, concerns the fate of the bird that serves as UNCW’s mascot, the seahawk. Almost wiped out in the northeast by DDT, this spectacular hawk has enjoyed a remarkable comeback. The Boston Globe called Return of the Osprey a “classic of American nature writing” and named it one of the top ten nonfiction books of 2001. Gessner is also the author of the critically acclaimed Under the Devil’s Thumb and A Wild, Rank Place.

Gessner joined the creative writing faculty this fall, after teaching environmental writing at Harvard College from 1999 to 2003.
