WILMINGTON, NC- Kenneth S. White, M.D., of Wilmington Plastic Surgery, has been recognized as this year’s University of North Carolina at Wilmington Albert Schweitzer Honors Scholar. White will give a lecture to the UNCW Honors Program freshmen at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in King Hall Auditorium. This is a free, public event sponsored by the UNCW Honors Scholars Program and Randall Library.

The Schweitzer award recognizes a person in the Cape Fear area who exemplifies the characteristics and principles of Albert Schweitzer, reflects his philosophy of life and excels in the fields of music, humanities or medicine. White is the second recipient of this honor and his name will be placed under Gerald Shinn, the first recipient, on the scholars plaque.

This year the focus of the award is on the humanitarian efforts of Schweitzer who, as a doctor, takes medical services to those who did not have access to them. White has based his professional life around this concept, doing medical mission work in the Dominican Republic. White encourages other doctors and members of the community to travel with him and to involve themselves in the effort to help those who are less fortunate.

Katherine Bruce, director of the honors program, says, “Dr. White is an inspiration to other doctors in Wilmington who want to also share their skills with those who do not have access to medical care. Dr. White’s long-term commitment to this endeavor is exciting and motivating.”

White’s lecture to the freshmen honors program will be addressing how careers and academic goals can be blended with a sense of community and dependability. Following his lecture, there will be a reception to honor White.
