Monday, November 17, 2003
By: Kenneth Luck, PR InternWILMINGTON, NC - The University Union Exhibit Series is hosting two art exhibits featuring works from students at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Both exhibits begin in November and will run until January.
The third annual All Student Show, a juried exhibition, will run through Jan. 26 in the Warwick Center Gallery. A reception for the student artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19. The exhibit is presented by the University Union arts committee and sponsored by the UNCW Campus Activities and Involvement Center. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
UNCW students submitted over 100 works in drawing, painting, watercolor and photography. Leon Schenker, an abstract expressionist, juried the show and selected 29 different student pieces for the exhibit. Schenker was a professor and chair of the fine arts department at New York University for 10 years before moving to Wilmington in 1990. He has studied with and under some of the great painters of the 20th century, including Pollock and de Kooning. Schenker’s work is currently on display at the Simmons Wright Gallery in downtown Wilmington.
The second exhibit entitled, Prints from Blocks and Plates: Selections from UNCW Printmaking Students will run through Jan. 12 in the University Union gallery. The exhibit features works by Professor Don Furst's class, Beginning Intaglio and Relief Printmaking.
Relief printing is a form of printmaking in which one carves away at the surface. The surface is typically linoleum, but wood and metal are also used. The raised surface is inked and printed onto paper. Intaglio is a form of printmaking where the incised lines of the plate hold the ink, the opposite of relief.
Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays 1 to 11 p.m.
