RE: UNCW Press Opportunity – “Troubled Waters: The Illusion of Abundance” Documentary Educator’s Resource Web site Launch
10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9
Eighth grade students at Williston Middle School of Math, Science and Technology will be the first in the state to participate in an interactive learning experience on water issues and solutions when the Troubled Waters: The Illusion of Abundance Web site is premiered next week. Williston Middle School was named a North Carolina school of distinction for high growth in 2002-03.
The Educator’s Resource Web site, developed to supplement the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s fifth educational documentary project, Troubled Waters: The Illusion of Abundance, will be launched at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Williston Middle School, 401 South 10th Street in the library.
Narrator Chancellor Emeritus James R. Leutze will speak, and the site will be launched. Williston students will then navigate the site.
The Web site expands on the information and issues presented in the documentary, which aired Oct. 8 on UNC-TV. It can be used independently or in conjunction with the documentary to help students gain a greater understanding of water scarcity issues and conservation of this precious resource. Primary to the site are the curriculum activities designed for educators and students.
Written by UNCW graduate students who are also public school teachers, the curriculum spans many subjects and engages the students in critical thinking and creative endeavors. As a benefit for all age groups, the site includes the documentary script, complete interview transcripts, water issues and solutions. There is also a resource section with information on related books, articles, organizations and Web sites.
For more information, contact Elaine Penn at 910/962-2657, Barbie Cowan at 910/962- 2650 and Williston Middle School Principal William Hatch at 910/815-6906.
