Memo to Media: Wilmington College Historical Marker

MEMORANDUM

TO: Wilmington Area Media

You are invited to attend the unveiling of an historical marker at the original location of Wilmington College, 13th and Market streets, across from New Hanover High School. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17.

The marker was provided by the Wilmington College Chapter of the UNCW Alumni Association, with Wilmington College alumni Jim Medlin ’52, Bill Dobo ’51 and Bob Dobo ’50 and J. Marshall Crews, professor emeritus, spearheading the project. It reads as follows:

Wilmington College

founded in 1947 by New Hanover County

the forerunner of UNC Wilmington

operated until 1961 in Isaac Bear

Elementary School which stood 75 feet south

Speaking at the ceremony will be UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, Jim Medlin and Pat Smith, executive director of the UNCW Alumni Association.

Parking will be available at Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, and a shuttle will provide transportation to the marker site.
