UNCW Community Link Features Wilmington's Tileston Clinic and The World's Largest Living Christmas Tree

Monday, December 15, 2003

Wilmington, NC – Programming for the week of December 22, UNCW Community Link, an interactive, public affairs television show speaks with representatives from the Tileston Clinic and goes to the site of Wilmington’s World’s Largest Living Christmas Tree lighting.

This week Betty Ann Sanders talks with Trish Doyle and Elizabeth Grace from the Tileston Outreach Clinic in Wilmington to get to discuss the services the clinic provides to the community. Doyle is the executive director of the clinic and Grace is a former nurse there, but is now a full time volunteer. The Tileston Outreach Clinic is a part of North Carolina’s Association of Free Clinics and offers free services to those who cannot afford health care. There is a maximum income requirement that all patients must fall under in order to receive the free help, and according to Doyle, there is a wide percentage of Wilmington residents that meet this “below poverty quotient.” The clinic offers a wide variety of services, including dental and vision.

This week H.E. “Hunter” Thompson Jr. highlights the 75th annual lighting of the "World's Largest Living Christmas Tree” in Hilton Park. The lighting of the tree is brought to Wilmington each year by the City of Wilmington's Department of Parks, Recreation and Downtown Services. The tree will remain lit through December 31, 2003. Admission is free. For more information, call Tammy at (910) 341-4602.

Wilmington Business 2 Business and Kidding Around magazine’s publisher, Joanie D. Martin, joins UNCW Community Link this week to give viewers more insight into her publications.

UNCW Community Link reaches beyond the television studio to allow citizens to sound off on compelling issues facing Southeastern North Carolina. Hosts Sanders and Thompson engage and challenge the region’s newsmakers and opinion-shapers and then ask viewers to voice their opinions. Through collaboration with the Southeast Public Interest Network of North Carolina (www.SpinNC.org), citizens can use the latest Internet technologies to continue the dialog on show topics and community ideas. UNCW Community Link is brought to you in part by the following sponsors: Time Warner Cable, Wilmington Star-News and WHQR Public Radio.
