UNCW Partnering with Tucker Creek Middle School on Environmental Project

Tuesday, January 27, 2004

Eighth grade students at Havelock’s Tucker Creek Middle School will partner with the

University of North Carolina Wilmington in an interactive learning experience on water issues and solutions on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004. News media are invited to join the students at 10:00 a.m. in the library.

The Troubled Waters Educators’ Resource Web site was developed to supplement the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s fifth educational documentary project, Troubled Waters: The Illusion of Abundance that aired Oct. 8 on UNC-TV, and which the students have studied.

While looking at global implications, the documentary focuses on North Carolina’s issues including aquifer depletion, saltwater intrusion, overuse, upstream/downstream issues, transboundary conflicts and water quality. In addition to being shown on public television across the state, video copies were sent to North and South Carolina public school systems and libraries.

The Troubled Waters Web site (www.uncw.edu/troubledwaters) expands on the information and issues presented in the documentary. It may be used independently or in conjunction with the documentary to help students gain a greater understanding of water scarcity issues and conservation of this precious resource. Primary to the site are the curriculum activities designed for educators and students.

Written by UNCW graduate students who are also public school teachers, the curriculum spans many subjects and engages the students in critical thinking, problem solving and creative endeavors. As a benefit for all age groups, the site includes the documentary script, complete interview transcripts, water issues and solutions. There is also a resource section with information on related books, articles, organizations and Web sites.

Those who will be joining Ms. Brenda Dail’s science students include Ms. Elaine Penn, UNCW Director of Special Projects/Executive Producer, Ms. Barbie Cowan, Public Relations and Research Coordinator for Special Projects/Associate Producer, Ms. Mimi Cunningham, Assistant to the Chancellor for University Relations and representatives from Weyerhaeuser Company.

Major sponsors for the Troubled Waters project are Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, Duke Power, McKim & Creed and Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort – Wrightsville Beach.
