Wilmington, N.C.—Divers from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington discovered and retrieved a lion fish from depths near 130 feet, almost 50 miles from the coast.

“The poisonous lion fish was found near waters of the Gulf Stream at depths that recreational divers don’t have the means to access,” according to Morgan Bailey, the UNCW technician who retrieved the fish.

Bailey and five other divers were on a scheduled dive to inspect fixed moorings as part of the NOAA’s CORMP.
