Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Center for Marine Science will host the fifth annual North Carolina Ocean Sciences Bowl: the Blue Heron Bowl. The statewide high school competition will be held Friday, Feb. 27 to Saturday, Feb. 28 in Dobo Hall. The Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education developed the competition to provide an educational forum for students to receive national recognition for their excellence in science. This is the second year UNCW has hosted the Bowl and it is one of only four universities in the state to host the regional competition.

This year, four more teams will participate than in last year’s event, which demonstrates the rising interest and commitment from high school students in the field of oceanic science. Associate director for the Center for Marine Science Ronald Sizemore said, “The Blue Heron Bowl is a unique opportunity for UNCW to highlight one of its strongest academic programs, marine science, to some of the brightest students from throughout the state of North Carolina.”



Twenty-two North Carolina high schools will participate in the competition this year. The winning team will represent North Carolina in the National Ocean Science Bowl held in April in Charleston, S.C. For more information visit www.uncw.edu/cmsr/ncosb/index.html.
