Wilmington -- About 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27, the UNCW Police Department responded to a student residence on campus in reference to a medical emergency. The patient was unresponsive upon arrival, and all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.



The cause of death is unknown, but the university is releasing the name of the student. He is Jeffrey (Jeff) Leigh Irby, a senior majoring in history, of Virginia Beach, Va. He was born Oct. 28, 1980.



“On behalf of the university, our thoughts and prayers extend to the family who is experiencing this loss,” said University Police Chief David Donaldson.



The university will provide additional information once it is appropriate to do so.



Wilmington Fire Department and New Hanover Regional EMS responded to assist.
